Many of the reasons we at AER have to rescue dogs are
because he/she was the victim of improper care or treatment.
Anything from total neglect, abandonment, or abuse to
simply an owner giving up a dog because it was sick
and just needed proper medical care. In some cases the
owners just needed ‘education’ on proper
dog health care. A lot of hard work and love have to
be given to a dog that has had improper care.
Owning a pet is perhaps one among the biggest blessings
for people at any age. Owners of these pets sometimes
treat these creatures as best friends. They can be a
food companion, rest companion, or play companion. These
pets can also make you feel comfortable during your
life’s hardest time. Indeed, pets are gifts to
humans.
Dogs are among the choicest
of pets of the people. The owners need to learn how
to care for their dogs so their pets can be the cleanest,
healthiest, and the greatest dogs in the entire world.
However, if you want to own a dog you need to be concerned
about the dog’s health at all times.
You can maintain dog health
through proper dog care. It is very important to your
dog. By doing the proper health care you will be able
to make your dog strong and healthy. The reason why
some dogs are neglected is because of selfishness of
some dog owners. Only a little time is spent to caring
for dogs. If dog owners do not give some of their time,
energy, affection and healthy dog habits, the result
is unhealthy dogs which are prone to allergies and malnutrition.
It is very important for
you to feed your dog with healthy foods. Never
overfeed your dogs. Overfeeding leads to indigestion
and overweight. It is never easy for a dog that has
indigestion. You will need to bring them to a veterinarian
to relieve it. Feed your dog with enough food and always
on time. Never feed your dog your ‘table scraps’.
This is very unhealthy for your dog as they are not
designed to eat many foods you eat. Carefully prepared
natural foods for your dog can be a great asset, but
you must first totally educate yourself to have your
dog eating ‘human’ foods.
Proper hygiene care is also
important to improve your dog’s health. You do
not have to take him/her to bathing everyday. Use shampoo
for dogs as it contains the right pH level for your
dogs. Human shampoo can cause some serious problems
like excessive hair fall or allergic reaction. If your
dogs have fleas, treat them by using and flea shampoo.
Some are not effective so you should choose the ones
with the trustworthy name.
Have your dog checked for
Heartworm once a year by your vet. Aside from checking
for any visible signs of problems with the dog, the
person can do better by bringing the pet in for the
regular examinations with the vet. Shots and other cleaning
can be done once a year or every three years depending
on the strength of the drug.
Owning a dog is a big responsibility.
The best way to make sure this pet will live for many
years will be to provide some preventive health care.
The person can read up or learn some things from the
vet which will surely be useful. Never underestimate
the importance of dog health. Follow the simple tips
so you can improve the quality of your dog’s health. http://doghealth.net
1. Know what and how to feed
them. The basic rule in feeding puppies—those are
8 to 12 weeks old—is to feed them four times a day.
For older puppies, one to three meals a day would do depending
on the dog’s age. Make sure that you feed puppies
with high-quality, brand-name puppy food to avoid vitamin
and mineral imbalances and bone and teeth problems that
can lead to bad eating habits and obesity.
For older dogs, also make sure
that you feed then with premium-quality dry food so you
can provide them with a well-balanced diet. These dry
foods may include cottage cheese, cooked egg, fruits,
and vegetables apart from broth or canned food varieties.
Also make sure that clean and fresh water are available
for their consumption.
2. Encourage them to exercise.
Like humans, dogs need exercise to burn off calories from
their bodies, to stimulate their minds, and to keep them
healthy.
Aside from helping them to
avoid boredom, exercise also lessens that possibility
of bad and destructive behaviors. Make sure that you provide
it with supervised fun and games to satisfy its instinctual
urges like digging, herding, chewing, retrieving, and
chasing.
3. Learn how to groom your
dog properly. Clean dogs lead healthy lives. Make sure
that you help keep the dog clean to reduce frequent shedding.
Brushing and bathing the dog regularly will also keep
fleas and ticks away.
4. Know how to handle the dog
properly. Proper handling of dogs greatly affects their
behavior. Handling a small dog require placing one hand
under the dog’s chest to support its hind legs and
rump.
If you own a large dog, lift
it from the underside while supporting his chest using
your arm. Avoid lifting or grabbing any dog by its forelegs,
tail or back of its neck because it may lead to bad posture.
5. Give it decent housing.
For a dog’s housing, a training crate is always
ideal. If you can’t afford one, make sure that the
dog has a warm and quiet place to rest like a dog bed
or a wooden box with a clean blanket or pillow inside
it.
6. License and identify your
dog properly. Make sure that you follow your community’s
regulations by attaching the dog’s license to its
collar to secure it once it gets lost.
7. Keep its health in check.
A regular visit with the veterinarian for a full check-up,
regular shots, and a heartworm blood test every year can
ensure your dog’s overall health.
Thank you to everyone
for attending the 2009 Reskie Reunion!
It was wonderful to see all of the Reskies
and their Family Members.
Today, Friday, November 27, 2009, was a good day for Dillion. He was an Eskie at a very high kill shelter in Tuscumbia, Alabama, and only had about a day or two to live. We, in St. Louis, were trying to help him. Being that is was so far away, we were trying to pull together a long transport. Someone told us about Pilots and Paws (www.pilotsnpaws.org). "Pilots N Paws" is a not for profit association where pilots donate their time and funds to bring pets to safety. So we requested a flight for Dillion. Dillion was lucky because "Dave Zilz" answered AER's request and said he would pick up Dillion for us -- wow, were we excited! So the team in Alabama (volunteers from PAWS Michelle and Tammy) pulled Dillion from the high kill shelter. They took him to a vet's office in Alabama where Dillion received medical treatment and was now safe. We are so thankful on this Thanksgiving Day weekend to have had Dillion rescued. Please enjoy these pictures and documentation of Dave and Dillion's journey. It took many volunteers to get Dillion to safety, and he is one happy boy. Thank you to everyone and Dave for getting this Eskie boy to safety. Dillion is about three years old, up to date on vaccinations, neutered, and ready for his forever home. He is a very sweet boy. Thanks, Dave! Be sure to visit www.pilotsnpaws.org to see more stories about this wonderful association. Please visit their website if you would like to make a donation to Paw N Pilots. Thank you.
Labor of Love Transport
On Labor Day, September 7, 2009, American Eskimo Rescue had the privilege of helping transport seven American Eskimo dogs from the puppymill bust in the Kennewick, Washington. There were 400 Eskies that were taken from this puppymill, and these seven were transferred to our affiliate Heartbandits rep in Santa Claus, Indiana - www.eskieranch.org. There were 22 legs of this very important transport, which started in Bellevue, Washington, and ended in Santa Claus, Indiana (over 22 hours of transport time). The schedule was carefully organized with routes and lodging and special care for each Reskie. This action changed the lives of the Kennewick Seven forever. Ray and Louise, who run the Eskie Rescue and Sanctuary in Indiana, will make sure all of these furkids will now have loving “forever homes.” There are more of these Eskies to be rescued from this puppymill bust. If you are able to foster just one of these angels, please call 314-647-1112. Medical and food expenses for these dogs will be covered. Donations are welcomed and will be used for the Kennewick Reskies. For more information on this rescue, please see the videos and pictures below and also visit http://www.angelfire.com/wa/ANGELHEARTESKIES/AEDAW.html. Thank you.

Please help shut down puppymills by not purchasing dogs from pet stores or on the Internet. Spay and neuter is the only way to help stop over population of unwanted dogs and cats. Adopt from a Rescue!!
